The South Sudan Bright Stars will face off “The Leopards” of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in their group B CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2019 opening fixture at FUFA Technical Center Njeru according to the released fixtures on Tuesday 3rd December 2019.
DRC was admitted as a guest team by the secretariat of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) to take part in the 2019 edition of the competition.
After the DRC battle, the Bright Stars will then play rivals Sudan on Tuesday 10th December 2019 in a Sudan derby a repeat of the 2015 CECAFA tournament which was staged in Ethiopia, before summarizing their group B fixtures against Somalia on Thursday 12th December 2019.
National team head coach Ashu Cyprian Besong on Sunday 1st December 2019 released his 21 man squad to start preparations ahead of the tournament with Juba based players already kicked off training at DR Biar Complex in Juba.
The Bright Stars last participated in the regional competition in 2017, losing to Ethiopia 3-0, before losing their next game to Uganda 5-1, the team only managed a goalless draw against Burundi in Kakemga town in Kenya.
The two top teams from group A, B and C are expected to automatically qualify into the quarter finals with the best 3rd placed teams also up for consideration. Kenya is the defending champions after beating Zanzibar 3-2 on penalties with normal 90 minutes ending 2-2.
