CECAFA: SSFA President Confirms Interest For Vice President Seat

The South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) President Francis Amin Michael has confirmed that he has contested for the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) vice presidency office.

Mr. Amin made the deceleration through his official twitter page “I have joined the race for CECAFA Vice President. As SSFA President, I would like to ask for your support in the new endeavors towards developing football in the region, I will appreciate your support”.

Amin became South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) President on 16th June 2017 garnered 22 votes out of 34 to wipe off competition from his two challengers Lual Maluk Lual and Arop Joh Aguer. He succeeds embattled Chabur Goc Alei, who was barred from defending his seat for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Elections which show Benasio Amum upset Sestilio Juba Lerib to clinch the vice president position.

During his tenure in office up-to-date, South Sudan Football fans have been witnessing a rapid growth of football activities including participation of national teams including South Sudan U-12 who participated in a median competition in  South Korea, U-17 participating in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) regional qualifiers in Tanzania, U-20 participated in CECAFA competition hosted in Uganda, with the country’s senior team qualifying for the second time in a row for the group stages all will go un noticed.

Amin was also able to prepare for first time a senior women’s team that took part in the CECAFA Senior Women’s championships in Tanzania, with yet another junior U-17 women’s team to take part in the CECAFA competition to take part in December 8th to 19th in Kampala Uganda.

Under his leadership to date there have been series of trainings conducted at different sections, including; referees, coaches and secretaries with some hosted outside the country. Sports Journalists both English and Arabic had one week training conducted at Land Mark Hotel.

However there is are still some areas which requires improvement like the nature of the League in the country, institutionalizing a women’s league, establishment of soccer academies for both men and women, so extending support to the already existing ones.

The elections for the new CECAFA executive body are slighted for 18 December, 2109 in Uganda Kampala at Hotel Africa, before the finals of CECAFA Men’s Senior Challenge Cup 2019

Nicholas Musonye, the CECAFA Secretary General said on Wednesday that the Assembly will take place a day before the climax of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

The new Statute allows for the President, two Vice Presidents and three Committee members to be elected.

Sudanese Mutasim Gafaar’s term as Cecafa President will end later this month. Abdigaani Arab Said, the President of the Somalia Football Association has been serving as the Vice President.

Some of the members of the out-going committee include; Aimable Habimana (Burundi), Wallace Karia (Tanzania) and Doris Petra (Kenya).

Other activities the new executive officials should be looking into are to organize workshops for their regional referees, coaches, media and administrators which has not been done for years.
