Basketball: South Sudan Gained 16 Points And Ranked 19 In Africa

The South Sudan Bright Stars National Basketball team have moved 16 place to 107 in the World and 19 in Africa in the latest FIBA World rankings released on 3rd March 2020

The Bright Stars were ranked at 127 in the 2019 official FIBA rankings, the current ranking supershow a 16 points gain with 86.4 points. 

South Sudan is ranked above closest neighbours Uganda who are 101 in the world and 17 in Africa with 90.1 points, Rwanda at 91 in the World and 12 in Africa with 99.2 points as being some of the countries within the Zone 5 marking. 

It should be noted that South Sudan took part in the Zone 5 Pre Qualification tournament hosted in Nairobi Kenya in January 2020, the country played Kenya, Tanzania, Eritrea, Burundi and Somalia.

South Sudan beat Somalia, Eritrea, Burundi, Tanzania in their opening 4 matches but lost to host and eventually winners Kenya in a 68-74 point difference after beating Somalia 114-79 points in their opening game.

The South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) board held elections in late 2019 and elected former NBA star Loul Deng as the federation President whom after taking office promised to improve the game of Basketball in South Sudan. 

Currently, the Nation Basketball governing body South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) is planning to organize a national basketball tournament for both boys and girls within the country within the age bracket of 14, 16 and 19. 

According to one of the federation officials, the tournament will help the federation scouts and technical team to identify players which will represent the country in the Junior competition slated for June 2020 in the Ugandan Capital Kampala.
