South Sudan Basketball Federation Secretary General Dragged To Police With Warrant Of Arrest Letter

The South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) Secretary General Marier Anyuat while addressing the media on Friday 13/03/2020 in his office has confirmed that at around 11:00am, he was dragged to a Police Station under a police arrest warrant letter issued by Malakia Police Station 

According to Anyuat in 2008, there was a case issued by the then steering committee at the South Sudan Basketball Federation Leadership 2008 which leadership was dismissed through a Ministerial Order No 14/ 2019, by then Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, Hon Dr. Nadia Arop Dudi, after the ministerial order Minister Arop instituted a new committee to run the basketball association for two month and organize the general election for a new committee to take over the affairs, something that went successfully.

In the letter addressed to the body, the minister cited that the National Basketball Federation committee has not achieved their goals of developing the careers of the youth in the sport while in office. She also added that there were a lot of complaints regarding the work of the National Basketball Federation committee which was not proper and good.

However after ministerial order, some of the Steering committee members ran to court citing that the minister was acting out of ignorance of the law and are not ready to leave their position. It should be noted that the South Sudan Basketball Federation  body was formed/ instituted in a Ministerial Order Number 2/2008, and another body was instituted in 2011.

In a letter seen by KurraSport addressed by a High Court Judge through Mr. Robert Lado Loki who was the former President of South Sudan Basketball Federation to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, was however bearing the current South Sudan Basketball Federation General Secretary Mr Marier Anyuat at the bottom of the letter to be arrested and there’s no reason given for his arrest as per the letter, while the case was opened against the by then Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports.

The Police court have therefore told the South Sudan Basketball Federation officials should stop work. Anyuat has however been bailed out by a relative and awaiting court proceedings on Monday 16th March, 2020. 

It should also be noted that on 24th November 2019, Former NBA star Luol Deng was elected new President of South Sudan Basketball Federation after winning 24 votes out of 25 during an election which took place in Juba Luol Deng is mandated to serve the federation for the next four years according to the federation’s constitution, alongside Mr. Marier Anyuat as the Secretary General and Deng Biar Deng as the Finance Secretary.

During their four (4) month in office South Sudan took part in the Zone 5 Afro Basketball Prequalification round and produced outstanding results beating the likes of Somalia, Burundi, Djibouti, Tanzania and only lost to Kenya with a 6 points difference. It should also be noticed that the South Sudan National Basketball team moved 20 place to 107 in the latest FIBA World rankings and ranked 19 in Africa as per the results released on 3 March 2020.

According to Anyuat, the Federation is planning and focusing on Women Basketball and also focusing on the U-18 national team that will represent the country in the upcoming engagement in Uganda Kampala, he also said the federation is working together with the Juba Basketball Association to better the Country in the Basketball sport. He however stated that they are still facing challenges to quickly accelerate the game. 

It should also be noted that the federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) has endorsed the newly elected officials of the South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSBF) on Thursday 16th January 2020.
