FIBA Grants South Sudan Basketball Senior Men’s Team Wild Card Spot

The Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) have granted the South Sudan National Basketball Senior Men’s Team a place in the Wild Card Tournament allowing one more team to advance to the AfroBasket 2021 Qualifying Rounds.

The tournament will be taking place between 23-25 October in Yaounde, Cameroon where we will face Cape Verde, Chad and Zimbabwe.

The team which tops the Wild Card Tournament group will participate in the second round of qualification for the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 in Group E with Morocco, Egypt and Uganda.

The teams will play two tournaments in the international windows with the top three teams from each group automatically qualifying to the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 to be held in Rwanda.

The plans and hard work continue for our operational team to field the best team possible in the upcoming tournament.

The South Sudan Bright Star are currently ranked at 107 in the World and will play Zimbabwe currently ranked at 139, Chad ranked at 104, Cape Verde ranked at 97. If South Sudan Bright Stars goes past Cape Verde Island, Chad, and Zimbabwe, they will then advance to Alexandria Egypt in November 2020 and join Egypt, Tunisia and Uganda In the final AFROBASKET qualification round. 

It should be noted that the Bright Stars beat all odds by pulling an outstanding performance at Nyayo Stadium Basketball Court, beating Somalia 112 to 79 during the opening FIBA Afrobasket – Preliminary Phase games. The team also went on to beat Eritrea 111 to 57,  Burundi 100 to 59, Tanzania 115 to 60 before losing to eventual Zone 5 winners Kenya by 68 to 74 points.
