South Sudan Basketball Federation President who also doubles as the national senior team coach Mr. Luol Ajou Deng has confirmed that the South Sudan National Senior Basketball team will set it’s preparatory training camp in Rwanda ahead of the second phase of the Afrobasket 2021 qualifiers.
Speaking while being hosted at one Local radio station in Juba, South Sudan, Luol Deng stated that “ We worked closely with our Rwanda counterparts, The Rwanda Basketball Federation officials if they can allow us to train there and the response was positive. We are going to be in Rwanda and help shape the team with their available training facilities and equipment”. Deng also confirmed that the team will be in Rwanda on Tuesday 2nd February 2021. Meanwhile the technical team will depart on Saturday 30th January 2021 to prepare all the team’s other logistics requirements.
According to the SSBF President the team will likely depart to Tunisia a week before the competition could commence in the city of Monastir (Tunisia). All remaining games of the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers will take place during this final window from February 17 to 21, 2021.
South Sudan is in group D alongside Rwanda, Nigeria, and Mali and is for second on the log after a quality pure performaces in the first phase of the Afrobasket qualifiers, wining 2 out of 3 matches, beating host Rwanda and Mali after losing their first fixture to African number one ranked team Nigeria.
The South Sudan who are looking forward to qualify for the first since the independence of the Country in 2011, will kick off their second phase qualifiers against Africa’s number one ranked country Nigeria on Wednesday 17th February 2021, then Mali on Thursday 18th February 2021, and then wind up the qualifiers with Rwanda on Friday 19th February 2021.
