Reports emanating from the CECAFA Secretariat is that the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup 2021 group draws have been pushed to another date.
The draws for this year’s competition were scheduled to be held on Friday, June 25 via Zoom. as per CECAFA official communication through their website.
However, this was not possible by close of business on Friday and there was no reason (s) mentioned by the committee on why that dates were pushed forward as the officials are yet to issue an official statement about the matter.
A source has revealed to KurraSport that the draws will be conducted “early next week.”
This year’s tournament, that will be played in the Ethiopian town of Bahir Dar between July 3-18th, bars players who are over 23 years and less than 18 years.
The South Sudan Bright Stars who did not took part in the 2019 Edition in Kampala Uganda as the Football Association could not raise the 20,000 USD required from a team to take part in the competition will be looking forward to take part in the July competition, although doubts are still being raised on which technical team will take charge of the team as they appoint is not yet done, there is even no available team which will take part in team as time is nearing.
It should be noted that Uganda is the defending champions after they beat Eritrea 3-0 in Kampala in 2019 to clinch a record extending 15th CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup title. The tournament was missed out last year, 2020, due to Covid19.
As the South Sudan fans are still waiting communication from the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) if indeed the Bright Stars will be expected to take part before the kickoff on July 3, Rwanda, Uganda and Somalia have formally confirmed participation, with Somalia going ahead by paying the 20,000 USD to the host FA as agreed by the CECAFA leadership.
Teams that on paper confirmed participation includes;- Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, DR Congo.
