South Sudan Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ivey Appoints Coaching Staff

The South Sudan Basketball Federation Head Coach Royal Ivey has appointed his coaching staff ahead of the upcoming AfroBasket 2021 taking place from 24 Aug – 5 Sep in Kigali, Rwanda according to the national basketball governing body SSBF.

Ajou Deng is returning alongside new additions Joe Mantegna and Fortune Solomon all bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Coach Ivey is delighted to form such a high level staff as training camp starts next week from 10th August in Kigali, Rwanda with all three acting as Assistant Coaches.

In the 2021 AfroBasket, South Sudan is pooled in group D alongside Senegal, Cameroon, and Uganda

“Ajou has been with the team from the start so not only does he have a great relationship with the core guys but also a very high IQ on Africa basketball and all the opposing teams. Ensuring we had him back was a must!

Joe Mantegna, the Head Coach of Blair Academy is a High School legend in New Jersey just recently having the court named after him.

At the helm since 1999, Mantegna has coached both Royal Ivey and our President, Luol Deng as well as helping the Men’s National Team behind the scenes for the past 2 years.

“Coach Mantegna was my high school coach but way more than that – a mentor, father figure and has helped me so much with my coaching career and continues to do so. Joe has coached with Team USA in international basketball so will also bring that invaluable experience to the team.”

The final addition is Fortune Solomon, a player development analyst with the OKC Thunder who Ivey took under his wing when at the NBA organization. Ivey is excited to bring in a young, up-and-coming coach to finalize his coaching staff.

“Fortune does it all in regards to both on and off the court. He is going to lead a lot of the skill development aspects for us as well as scout and video breakdown. Fortune is a guy I wanted to bring in as soon as I was hired and know he will bring a lot to help us be successful.”

Other Staff include: Dzaflo Larkai & Mandela Koudi (Player Development) and Jacob Ross (Strength & Conditioning).
