As teams across the CECAFA region are gearing up preparations ahead of the zonal qualifiers, Uganda sports website Football256 is reporting that up to five players in the Uganda Hippos U20 squad have tested positive for the coronavirus.
The players whose identities have been kept confidential for now returned positive COVID-19 results in the tests taken from the players as they entered camp on Saturday.
The players are said not to be experiencing any symptoms of the virus and have been instructed to isolate away from the rest of the group for at least the next seven days.
Up to 46 players were summoned by head coach Morley Byekwaso to kick start preparations for the upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations Zonal Qualifiers.
The squad comprises six goalkeepers, thirteen defenders, ten midfielders and sixteen forwards and is currently residing at the Cranes Paradise hotel in Kisaasi.
Despite the infections, the team is said to continue with their preparations as earlier planned.
The team is currently training at the IUIU Campus in Kabojja until November 4 when they will shift to the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
The Hippos will be involved in a residential camp at Njeru until November 19, when they will depart for the zonal qualifiers.
The zonal qualifiers will be staged in Tanzania from November 22 to December 6, 2020.
Uganda is pooled in group B alongside Burundi, Eritrea and South Sudan.
Meanwhile, Football256 has also reported that none of the Uganda Cranes local-based players contingent that are also currently in camp at the same residence have returned positive results.
