The South Sudan Athletics Federation (SSAF) through it’s Secretary General Mr. Marco Akol Deng has confirmed that they have suspended all its programs until further notice due to the pandemic Coronavirus.
The decision was taken by the federation executive committee members of the South Sudan Athletics Federation (SSAF) due to the Pandemic Coronavirus. “We would like to inform the general public and athletics family that upon the carefulness consideration of the Ministry of Health together with the Presidential appeal about Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the government directives about public gatherings including sporting events should be suspended, the SSAF has postponed ALL its activities until further notice” Says Akol.
According to the SSAF Secretary General the communication takes imminent effect, and the decision is also consistent with the posture of World Athletics, and the Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA). CAA said the urgent action is necessary given the risk of community spread that gatherings for our competitions could foster across the country.
The SSAF however, urges all athletes and coaches to continue with their individual training till the situation normalizes. “We urge members of SSAF and the general Public to adhere to the directives from our national health authorities”
It should be noted that on Sunday 9th February 2020 SSAF selected ten (10) athletes who are supposed to be representing South Sudan in African Cross Country Championship in Lome Togo in April 2020.
All the athletes were selected on Saturday 8th February 2020 during the 2nd South Sudan National Cross Country in Buluk, with all the participants coming in from all the states as per confirmation from the SSAF Secretary General.
According to the South Sudan Athletes Federation (SSAF) Secretary General Mr. Marco Akol, the selected athletes were to go for camping and have enough preparation before going to Togo for the cross country, however all have to be aborted.
